JOB DESCRIPTION: Network Engineer


JOB SUMMARY* Under the direction of the Technology Supervisor, person is responsible to design, implement, and administer all district LAN and WAN networks which include products made by Novell, Microsoft, Cisco, and Apple; support and assist in all areas of computer hardware and software upgrades, maintenance, repairs, etc.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*

  • Assists in the daily activities of the District Technology Office, including but not limited to, attending weekly planning meetings, completing assigned tasks, and overseeing project completion.
  • Responsible to ensure the district stays legal with all computer usage, including but not limited to, software licenses, and network security.
  • Assists in planning, developing, and coordinating the installation, updating, and administration of all computer services of the district and its schools.
  • Assures proper operation of the district and schools' LAN and WAN including Cisco routers and other related hardware and software.
  • Responsible for the installation, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining of the district's local and wide area network equipment including, but not limited to, Cisco routers and switches, and CSU/DSUs, and all wireless networking devices.
  • Assists in troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining district computers and networks.
  • Assists in the installation of software on computers and networks as needed.
  • Assists with the installation of computers and hardware as needed.
  • Assists with maintaining an accurate inventory and record of repairs on all computer equipment.
  • Helps to develop and implement equipment and software security policies and procedures.
  • Develops (with the aid of a committee) and implements network security, and disaster recovery policies and procedures to protect the integrity of the data stored on the network.
  • Attends regional and statewide meetings that apply, such as the Regional Brain Share (RBS), and the T-Forum meetings.
  • Stays abreast of new technologies, and their applications.
  • Advises on hardware and software purchases.
  • Works closely with other staff in a positive fashion.
  • Communicates effectively with Technology Office and other district staff regarding features or problems and required solutions.

  • Perform other job duties as assigned by the Technology Supervisor.

  • Possesses problem-solving skills. - Exhibit knowledge of the principles, operation, and capabilities of network hardware, software, and protocols. Exhibit knowledge of common software programs with ability to learn specialty programs used by the district and/or schools. Demonstrate skill in the use of hardware and protocols specific to the assignments. Speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Work well with other Computer Services and non-Computer Services staff. Accept and take direction from the immediate supervisor as required.
  • Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret software and hardware technical manuals and guidebooks, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, procedure manuals, and network documentation. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators and the general public. Ability to communicate with staff in a variety of situations.
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of working with binary and hexadecimal numbers. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • REASONING ABILITY: - Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: - Must be able to establish and maintain effective, positive working relationships with students, all technical staff, and district staff members. And the ability to bring the Computer Services staff to a consensus as a team.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and move about the work area; use hands or handle, fingers, and feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and depth perception.   • WORK ENVIRONMENT: - he noise level in the work environment is quiet or moderate. Required Education and Training for Essential Functions:

  • Must be a high school graduate.
  • Novell Certified Network Engineer or Master Certified Network Engineer certification required.
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate or Cisco Certified Design Associate certification required.
  • Microsoft Certified Professional certification required.
  • Previous experience with personal computer, servers, and Novell networks required.
  • Post secondary training in information technologies or related field required.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL and Unix required.
  • A+, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, or Network+ certification preferred but not required.
  • Programming skills an advantage but not required.
