JOB DESCRIPTION: Director of Activities
JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the school principal is responsible for administration of all extra-curricular activities programs; the selection and supervision of coaches and others in school activities programs; provides overall leadership and coordination among the various activities to facilitate programs that provide students worthwhile learning experiences.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*
Logistical:
1. Administers all interscholastic policies and procedures working within the confines of the rules and by-laws of the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA).
2. Develops all interscholastic non-league game schedules supported by a copy of the contract form kept in files.
3. Arranges logistics for all interscholastic events such as transportation, lodging and meals.
4. Arranges for medical assistance at all home varsity games and larger athletic events.
5. Plans, organizes and supervises all athletic awards programs with the approval of the principal.
6. Coordinates with the Maintenance Supervisor for the repair and maintenance of athletic fields, track and gymnasiums.
7. Manages athletic facilities and controls the use of same by band, teams, squads, etc.
Clerical:
1. Contracts all game officials.
2. Interprets board policy to the extent necessary to provide guidance for students and coaches.
3. Maintains a file of players , medical examinations, insurance forms, records, parent consent forms, payments, etc.
4. Maintains yearly records for each sport (wins/losses, outstanding records, persons who letter, etc.)
5. Maintains file of all athletic suspensions and expulsions from teams in order to give each athlete "due process".
6. Determines scholastic eligibility of all candidates for extra-curricular activities on a weekly basis and for certifying their eligibility on required forms.
7. Provides for storage and maintains perpetual inventory of all athletic equipment.
8. Presents recommendations for changes in athletic policies from the athletic staff to the Superintendent.
Financial:
1. Receives from authorized coaches quotations for equipment; evaluates and approves appropriate orders.
2. Manages all home interscholastic contests and when admission is charged is responsible for the safe keeping and deposit of gate receipts.
3. Schedules a reasonable and equitable program for the utilization of concession stands.
Personnel:
1. Observes coaches a minimum of five (5) times during the season in order to make future recommendations in terms of job expectancies and to make recommendations to the principal as to coaches' job assignments.
2. Evaluates all new candidates for original appointments and shall be a member of the selection committee which includes the Principal, Activities Director, and one other coach.
3. Evaluates various extra-curricular programs, seeking ways of improving interscholastic activities.
Supervision:
1. Resolves conflicts that may develop within the ranks of the Athletic Department.
2. Attends all home athletic contests and/or arranges for proper supervision of home contests by administrative personnel.
3. Acts as tournament manager for all league and tournament playoff activities that are assigned to the District.
4. In consultation with the principal and head coach, makes the decision to cancel or postpone a contracted contest because of non-playing conditions.
5. Promotes publicity for all interscholastic sports (brochures, press, radio and game programs).
6. Represents the school in all athletic business at league and conference meetings.
7. Responsible for the operation and organization of the press boxes.
8. Maintains an active program that promotes sportsmanship and welcomes the competing teams and guests.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS*
1. Assists in the preparation and distribution of complimentary passes for the school district.
2. Works with the principal, cheerleading advisors and coaches involved in scheduling all athletic assemblies and pep rallies.
3. Perform other job duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Necessary to Performance of Essential Functions:
1. Knowledge of Utah High School Activities Association rules and regulations.
2. Knowledge of overall operation of athletic program.
Required Education and Training for Essential Functions:
1. Valid Utah teaching license and subject specific endorsement, or alternative program leading to license.
2. Previous successful experience as a coach desirable.
