WordPerfect SET Files

Reference sheet prepared by Jolene M. Morris, District Technology Director, Grand Co. School District

SET Files

When you run WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS, it creates a file called a setup file (or 'SET file' for short). This file keeps a record of where you want your files stored, how you want your screen to look, which font you like, and which printer you want to use. You should edit (change) your set file the first time you use WordPerfect and each time a new printer is added to your network.

The set file is saved in your personal working directory (on your H: drive). Its filename starts with the letter-W and has an extender of .SET. A sample set file might be W509LK}.SET. The rest of this reference sheet explains how to edit your set file. It assumes you are using WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS set up on a Novell network using H: as your home directory.

Adding Another Printer

If the network administrator or sysop adds another printer to your network, you may need to change your SET file. If you will never be printing on that new printer, don't change your set file. If you do want to access the new printer, you'll need to delete your old SET file and create a new one. You cannot just edit your old SET file when a new printer has been added to your network. Follow these rules to delete your old SET file and edit the new one:

1. Before going into WordPerfect, press the letter-R for Remove Files

2. Highlight your SET file (it will start with the letter-W and have .SET at the end of it).

3. Press <Delete> to mark the old set file for deletion.
