MUD stands for Multiple User Dimension -or- Multiple User Dungeon. This is a game area similar to the Dungeons and Dragon games popular several years ago. You telnet to a MUD site to "play the game".
After logging into the MUD site, you take on the role of a character and wander around the environment according to the rules set up by the MUD operator (called the MUD God). Be sure to read the rules of each particular MUD. Some MUDs allow you to chat with other players and form teams to win the game.
Other similar telnet places may be called MOOs or MUSHes. MOO stands for Multiuser Dimension Object Oriented and MUSH represents Multiuse Shared Hallucination.
