ICLAS -- menu items

Reference sheet prepared by Jolene M. Morris, District Technology Director, Grand Co. School District

ICLAS

ICLAS is an acronym which stands for IBM Classroom Local Area Network Administration System. ICLAS is a menu system for a network which was made especially for use in schools. It has many features to make a network easy to use for teachers and students, plus it has many security features which keep your network protected.

Menu Items

The network sysop (administrator) will add and remove programs from the network, but you have control over your own ICLAS menu. You can add any installed programs to your ICLAS menu. You can also remove any program from your menu without affecting the network.

When the sysop adds a program to the network, there are three places it can go:

Programs

Office Applications

Special Menu Items

It is up to the sysop where new programs are placed; but generally, educational programs to be used by students go in the program area. Programs to be used by teachers go in the office applications area. Computer utilities and special functions (such as formatting a floppy disk) go in the special menu items. Remember, a sysop can place a new program in any one of these three areas so you may have to look in all three to find the program you want.

Adding/Removing a Menu Item

There are seven easy steps to add a menu item:

1. Log onto the ICLAS network.

Notice that on the right side of the screen are the three program options:

Add/Remove Programs

Add/Remove Office Applications

Add/Remove Special Menu Items

2. Use the arrow keys to highlight the Add/Remove area you want, then press the Enter-key.

The screen will be split in half. On the left half, you'll see a list of programs already on your menu. On the right half, you'll see a list of programs the sysop has made available on the network but are not on your ICLAS menu.

3. Highlight the program you want to add or remove.

4. Press the Insert-key to add a program or press the Delete-key to remove a program.

5. You may highlight another program to add or remove it also. Each program you mark to add to your menu will appear in green. Each program you mark to remove from your menu will appear in red.

6. When you have all programs marked to add or remove, press the [F10] key.

You should see the left side of your screen change as the programs you marked are added or removed.

7. Press the Escape-key to return to the Teacher Application Menu.
